Liminal Space

2021 was about liminality.

Although I wasn’t lost and wasn’t in need of being found, the last two years have been a transitory place, a holding space, a period of growing within stillness and of changing despite no new movement. This year was that in between place that exists in the space of becoming. The period of time where something grows before it blooms and the moment that exists both as a before and after. It was the waiting space of becoming someone new.

I didn’t start any new projects, accomplish any major life goals, or grow in any hugely particular way; some phases of life are like that, you know. And they still count. It’s been two years of more spaciousness to discover myself in this moment of time as a mother, a wife, a business person. To rediscover myself as a person within and beyond all of these layers, roles, and identities. Two years of not doing too many things except finding steadiness in this period of dormancy knowing that like plants, this germination phase I've been will be followed by a sprouting.

I think most of us in some way or another have found ourselves within this liminal space over the last two years. The waiting for a new sense of normalcy to emerge in pandemic times; life before COVID-19 or after. Or perhaps this liminal space has existed for you in other places; life before the loss of loved one and life after, the transitional space of motherhood, a different stage of life, a new career, or settling into a new place, relationship, or identity.

We can trust that this transit space will hold us until we are ready to sprout. Until then, there is a soft invitation to bring attention to what is with an open heart while leaning into the possibility of what can be. We can rest in knowing that these germination phases of our lives also bear fruit, also contain lessons, and also move us forward. We can ally with acceptance and allow ourselves to be fully in this place without efforting to be anywhere but here.

And so this liminal space is one I’ve been settling into and moving around in for the last two years. One I’ve had plenty of time to reflect on and learn from as I emerge into 2022. And through this passage of time I’ve learned that it’s a space worth resting into, getting comfortable with, and bringing mindful attention to.

Notice the energy that exists within stillness,

Can you bring mindful attention here?

Can you allow yourself to be here?

Can you nourish yourself in the moment you are in?

It’s also a theme I’ll center on and explore in-depth in with you in my upcoming workshop. We’ll reflect on these spaces in our lives, explore what we might need or have to learn, and practice being with what is until the current of what will be carries us forward.
